Joe Biden’s refusal to offer a personal apology to Anita Hill who he absolutely wronged during the Clarence Thomas hearing so many years ago, reveals that he is a despicable human being. And it exposes the Democratic party establishment’s contempt for the US public, that they would foist upon us the man with no real conscious, no real creeds and no real convictions.
And the fact that people who were recently polled chose him over the other candidates, reveals that people either do not know Joe, or have been fooled by his rhetoric which excuses his poor past policy decisions because he insists that he had good intentions.
Biden apparently decided that he needed to clear the air with Hill before announcing he was running for president. He had been silent for over 27 years about the treatment Hill received when she sought to testify before a Congressional confirmation committee seeking to vet then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.
However while apologizing for what she had to endure, he failed to offer a personal apology to Hill for the humiliation and criticism for which she was subjected. Choosing his words carefully, Biden has gone on the record saying, he wishes he “could have done something” to give her “the hearing she deserved.”
Biden said “could” instead of the more appropriate “would”, because he indeed “could” have given her a fair hearing. The senator allowed Thomas to testify before and after Hill. And her story about Thomas’ behavior toward women had been corroborated by a few other women who also accused him of sexual harassment. Two of those women, Angela Wright and Sukari Hardnett agreed to make themselves available to testify, but Biden never called upon them.
In fact Biden blocked Hardnett and Angela Wright, and another woman who accused Thomas of sexual harassment, from testifying before the Committee to support Hill’s testimony. Hardnett, submitted a sworn affidavit to the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time testifying that she had been subject to Thomas’ “unpleasant” attention,” as she put it in a recent interview.
Interestingly, the man who would be president, repeated this misrepresentation recently while speaking at the (oxymoronic) Biden Courage Awards. Biden said that Hill “showed the courage of a lifetime talking about her experience being harassed by Clarence Thomas, but she paid a terrible price.” He said, Hill, “was abused in the hearing. She was taken advantage of. Her reputation was attacked. I wish I could have done something… To this day I regret I couldn’t come up with a way to get her the kind of hearing she deserved.” Courage Awards? If Biden had any intestinal fortitude he would have told the truth and asked for Hill for forgiveness for failing to do what he could have done.
The NY Times wrote on the conversation between Hill and Biden reporting that Hill said that she did not receive a personal apology from Biden and was unimpressed with his overture. “I cannot be satisfied by [Biden] simply saying, ‘I’m sorry for what happened to you,” she said. “I will be satisfied when I know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose.”
Only someone extremely disingenuous, dishonest, or just clueless can appear on national TV (“The View”) as Biden did and say, “I’m sorry for the way she got treated,” and then claim that “I don’t think I treated her badly.”
“The View’s” host Joy Behar tried mightily to help Biden understand that Hill wanted an actual heartfelt apology. “Here’s your opportunity right now to just say you apologize, you’re sorry. I think we can clean this up right now,” Behar naively said to the presidential candidate. “I think what she wants you to say is, ‘I’m sorry for how I treated you … not ‘for the way you were treated.’ ”
But the View’s host didn’t understand that Biden has no intention on apologizing to Hill just as he refuses to apologize to women who have accused him of inappropriately touching them, to do so would be inconsistent with his character. He has consistently represented himself as paragon of liberalism, progressivism and decency, while doing just the opposite.
In the early 70’s while a Delaware Senator, he declared to be in support of school integration, but was an ardent opponent of busing. He partnered with avowed racist South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond to oppose federal efforts to achieve public school integration through busing, which in many instances was the only logical way of accomplishing it.
When pressed about why he was so adamantly opposed to busing to achieve integration, he was quoted in a 1975 U.S. News and World Report, saying that the real racists were busing advocates. Busing, the disingenuous Biden said, “implied that Blacks have no reason to be proud of their inheritance and their own culture.”
The self-proclaimed liberal was said to favor prison reform, yet authored the 1994 Crime Bill, one of the most draconian and pro prison pieces of legislation passed in modern times. The result was our present system of neo slavery or mass incarceration.
He has presented himself as a dove, but voted for the Iraq War. He talks about being a man of the people, but helped gut Glass Steagall opening the door for the Great Bank robbery by the Big Banks that turned out to be too big to jail.
Since being under fire for his behavior around women he has tried to present himself as a woman’s advocate, but while in Congress He voted to weaken equal pay provisions for women. He also voted to weaken federal statues against workplace harassment and voting rights
Biden does not support reparations, judging from a statement in the 1970’s to a local Delaware newspaper. “I do not buy the concept, popular in the ’60s, which said, ‘We have suppressed the Black man for 300 years and the White man is now far ahead in the race for everything our society offers. In order to even the score, we must now give the Black man a head start, or even hold the White man back, to even the race,’…I don’t buy that.”
“I don’t feel responsible for the sins of my father and grandfather. I feel responsible for what the situation is today, for the sins of my own generation. And I’ll be damned if I feel responsible to pay for what happened 300 years ago,” said Biden.
Somebody has referred to Biden as an “old school” Democrat. What they likely meant is that Biden harkens to the days before the party of FDR or JFK and LBJ, and even before the Dixiecrats, to the days of the Reaction, when the Democrats aided in the terror campaign that disenfranchised Blacks and brought an end to Reconstruction
But candidate Biden would have folks believe he has changed, cleaned up his contradictions and that he now has convictions, when principles have never been a part of his program. Biden has not changed. He has only polished up his act, he is the same old worn out Democratic party demagogue who will be presented in months to come as the only viable opposition to Trump in 2020. He will be trotted out as the good cop in the bourgeoisie’s clever election season farce, otherwise known as good cop/ bad cop, in which we the voting public are the unsuspecting victims, because the rich folks win either way.
Justice then peace
