In his recent address to Congress, President Donald Trump used the tears of Carryn Owens, widow of Navy Seal Ryan Owens, who died in the US raid on Yemen last month, to hide the fact that the raid was not a raid at all, but a gangster like “hit” on another member of the family of Anwar Al-Awacki, 8 year old Nawar Al-Alwaki. The unwarranted attack fulfilled a Trump campaign promise and its US Imperialism’s way of sending a message to its enemies; nothing is sacred and nobody is off limits.
Nawar or “Nora” as she was known by her family was the daughter of San Antonio, Texas born Muslim cleric and US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki. Al-Awlaki was killed by the Obama administration in a so-called “signature” drone strike in 2011.
If it sounds far-fetched that the US government would carry out a hit on the family member of a designated “enemy of the State,” then consider that al-Awalki’s 16 year old son Abdulrahman al-Alwalki was killed “accidentally,” by the US government in a drone strike, only a month after it killed his father in the same fashion.
The US government responded to the international outcry accusing it of targeting Al-Awlaki’s family, by saying the teenager had been “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Adding insult to injury, White House press secretary at the time, Robert Gibbs, tried blaming the child for his murder saying, “I would suggest that you should have a far more responsible father.”
Is it a mere coincidence that a declared enemy of the State’s teen-aged son and now female child, are killed in US attacks? Incidentally the child’s mother was shot as well but survived!
Anyone paying attention knows that since the raid, there has been no reasonable or clear explanation for it, which was initially purportedly conducted to snatch files from an Al Qeada operative in Yemen.
However US officials told NBC News last week that, “Last month’s deadly commando raid in Yemen, which cost the lives of a U.S. Navy SEAL and a number of children, has so far yielded no significant intelligence.”
The raid cost 25 Yemeni civilians their lives, most were women, including nine children under the age of 13, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
Young Nora was shot in the neck by US Navy Seals and died two hours later with her grandfather watching helplessly. So much for the glorification of the bravery of a bunch of mercenaries, who ran into someone else’s country and shot and killed innocent women and children.
When US Senator John McCain said that he thought the raid was aimed at killing suspected militants. NBC News reported that,” defense officials did not dispute McCain’s characterization, saying they were hoping to kill or capture certain militants, though they declined to name them.”
As untenable as the proposition may be to those still clinging on to the idea of the US government as the moral light of the world, there is no other reasonable explanation for this seemingly, out of the blue attack.
The message was crystal clear. Killing the 8 year old daughter of a radical anti- US cleric was a gangster move designed to say, ‘if you mess with us we will take out your entire family.’
Al- Awalki was an American citizen who began to denounce the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the US interventions in the Middle East. He left the US and began delivering fiery anti- US messages. Though Al-Awalki had not attacked the US, he was killed in a so-called “signature” drone strike.
The US claimed at the time without providing proof that he had mentored or had a hand in failed attacks against the US.
What’s most significant is that then president Obama became the first president to kill an American citizen, without due process. This “extrajudicial execution” was a flagrant violation of the US Constitution, which White House lawyers managed to “memo” over.
“We do not believe that al-Awlaki’s U.S. citizenship imposes constitutional limitations that would preclude the contemplated lethal action” [by the U.S. military or the CIA],” wrote the US Justice Department in a memo approving the murder in 2014.
And liberals and so-called left leaning progressives said nary a word about this crime.
Before the senior al-Awlaki’s killing it was accepted US jurisprudence that American citizens could not be killed by the government without what was thought to be the constitutionally guaranteed right to a trial, in which one can defend themselves against charges brought by the government.
Those who have begun to wake up as a result of the draconian measures taken by new President Trump, should also wake up the other immoral and indecent workings of the US government . This just in,”US warplanes conducted 30 strikes on Yemen. I didn’t know the US was at war with Yemen. Gangsterism at its finest.
